I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University is the oldest Russian medical educational institution providing training in full range of specialties related to medicine and healthcare.

Sechenov University is the first and the oldest medical school in Russia tracing its history from the medical faculty of Moscow Imperial University founded in 1758.
The history of First MSMU is tightly connected with the history of medical education and healthcare in Russia. The University is a cradle of most national medical schools and scientific medical societies, first medical journals, guidebooks and manuals.
In 1791, Moscow Imperial University was granted the right of conferring a Doctor of Medicine degree.
In 1891, Ivan M. Sechenov was elected professor of the Chair of Physiology.
In 1930, there was a reorganization of the medical faculty of Moscow State University into First Moscow Medical Institute (First MMI), an independent higher medical institution with two faculties, the therapeutic prophylactic faculty and the sanitary and prophylactic (sanitary and hygienic since 1935) faculty.
In 1940, in accordance with the Decree of the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium First MMI was awarded with an Order of Lenin. The First MMI abbreviation was changed into First MOLMI.
In 1955, first MOLMI was named after I.M. Sechenov.
In 1990, on the Resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers I.M. Sechenov First Moscow Medical Institute was raised to I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy of the USSR Ministry of Public Health.
In 2010, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy was granted a status of the University and has changed its name into I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.
In 2017, Sechenov University is known as the only medical University in Russia, listed in “best-1000” and ranks 13th out of 24 Russian universities-participants of the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking.
The quality training at Sechenov University is executed by the academic staff consisting of two thousand highly qualified specialists. More than 20 inventions are registered by the staff of the Sechenov University annually, 85% of the academic staff have scientific degrees and 40% of the members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) are professors of the University.
The main principles of the University’s strategic initiatives are: internationalization, development of intellectual products of international level in the field of bioengineering, bioinformatics, molecular medicine, neuroscience.
Currently, Sechenov University provides a central focus for research and education to advanced knowledge in increasingly important areas of healthcare and attempts to create opportunities for young enthusiastic researchers to develop their ideas.
«School – University – Clinic» model of medical education at Sechenov University allows for an effective, self-regulating system of continuous education and professional continuum in healthcare.
In addition to the developments in the field of medical education and science the Sechenov University has broadened its international activity and is currently actively establishing mutually beneficial partnership relations with medical schools all over the world.
Now more than 140 specialists of the University are members of one or more foreign and international scientific and professional societies, organizations and associations. The University frequently commanders abroad around 200 members of it’s staff and students for various purposes. Annually, more than 100 people take part in more than 60 major international forums.
Students fond of research activities are also welcome to join scientific societies that work within all chairs of the University. This is the best way of sharpening professional expertise and research skills, which are essential along the course of the degree studies.
The Sechenov University is the leader among the medical higher educational establishments of Russia in terms of number of training foreign students. According to the university data as of 2016 there were training 1858 students from 74 foreign countries.
Center for International Education is in charge of training international students. It executes the entire spectrum of activities connected with admission, training, graduation, certification, and other support of the degree-seeking international students, interns, residents, PhD students, postdoctoral students, and participants of CME courses, as well as international alumni.
There are 5 hostels at the Sechenov University. In hostels there are all the necessary facilities created for students. Administration provides students with furniture, necessary bedding, gives the opportunity to use social and domestic premises. Hostels are equipped with the essential household appliances, laundry rooms and Internet network.
